Pictures of the Year competition judging kicks off Feb. 16 in record-breaking year

Pictures of the Year competition judging kicks off Feb. 16 in record-breaking year The 78th annual competition begins online Feb. 16, 2021, with virtual judging, nearly twice the usual judges and a record 40,000-plus images, plus short films and online storytelling presentations. Reynolds Journalism Institute offers this virtual Professional Development event; program and RJI photojournalism director Lynden Steele notes increased entries despite COVID-19 isolation, reflecting a tumultuous 2020 marked by the pandemic, Black Lives Matter-inspired movements and the election. The oldest and most prestigious photojournalism contest received over 2,000 entries each in general news (normally about 1,000) and daily life (normally 1,300–1,400), plus 200 artistic stories in the new “COVID-19 Personal Expression” category, permitting manipulation barred elsewhere to explore pandemic experiences, feelings and thoughts, creativity and resilience; join: https://umsystem.zoom.us/j/94593607986
