Entries open for 82nd Pictures of the Year competition; deadline is Jan. 12 Hosted by Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) and sponsored by Nikon, the 82nd Pictures of the Year (POY) competition accepts entries through Jan. 12, 2025; fees rise from $50 to $60 on Jan. 6, with 37 categories including photographer of the year, international photographer of the year, U.S. presidential election coverage and Olympic sports. This is the first contest led by Marie D. De Jesús, who joined RJI earlier this year and also directs College Photographer of the Year; she emphasizes that daily reporting—not only special assignments—can yield award-worthy photographs. A new Missouri School of Journalism pilot pairs alumni Michael Hamtil (BJ ’96), Deb Pastner (MA ’24) and master’s candidate Antranik Tavitian with students to review entry ethics and learn from judging; judges include New York Times Photo Editor Eve Edelheit (BJ ’11) and Cincinnati Enquirer Director of Photography Cara Owsley.
