Covering Communities at Risk: What Can Reporters and Outlets Learn from Ethnic Media?

An illustrated reporter listens to a small group of community members gathered around a table.

“Covering Communities at Risk: What Can Reporters and Outlets Learn from Ethnic Media?” is a virtual livestream webinar jointly offered by the Online News Association and USC Center for Health Journalism on Thursday, March 12, 2026, 3:00–4:00 PM EDT; registration is available. Amid a news media trust crisis and credible information overtaken by rumor and misinformation, it explores ethnic media’s community connections and audience engagement strategies to build trust and reach vulnerable communities, drawing on reporters and newsrooms in the Center’s Engagement Initiative that innovatively center community voices. Panelist Enrique Chiabra, Telemundo 52 Los Angeles anchor and special-assignment reporter, covers varied topics, especially immigrants and LGBTQ+ communities; he holds 11 LA Emmys, a 2021 Ruben Salazar Award and a 2016 GLAAD Award, and his 2024 California Health Equity Fellowship project examined incurable lung disease silicosis affecting more Latino immigrant workers in Cali
