Develop a Walking Tour Pilot for Your Newsroom in 60 Minutes

An open notebook with a sketched walking route sits on a desk, with a stylized neighborhood streetscape in the background.

Develop a Walking Tour Pilot for Your Newsroom in 60 Minutes is an audience engagement professional development session on April 16, 2026, 3:00–4:00 PM EDT via Zoom (link in confirmation email). The first half explores walking tours as local journalism and their potential to grow revenue, audience and journalistic impact for local newsrooms, niche publications and independent journalists; the second has attendees brainstorm and plan community- and publication-specific itineraries, with operating tips and fit assessment, completing a first step toward a pilot. Speaker Cara Kuhlman draws on her RJI Fellowship project, A Tour Guide for Journalists, a free digital guide to launching local tour pilots; she founded and edits Future Tides, launched in 2021, merging maritime and media experience to cover how people work, play and live on Pacific Northwest waterways and help the maritime community navigate what’s next.
