Collaborating with Smithsonian's rural initiatives

An open notebook sits on a desk overlooking a rural town with a small museum, community buildings and surrounding farmland.

Collaborating with Smithsonian's rural initiatives is a Professional Development session on April 29, 2026, at 1:00 PM (Location: TBA; City: TBA), inviting leaders from the Institute for Nonprofit News’ Rural News Network to learn how rural newsrooms can join the Smithsonian’s expanding engagement with rural communities nationwide. In this introductory session, Smithsonian staff will share its Rural Initiative work with rural partners and preview Our Shared Future: 250, a nationwide effort leading up to the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026 that invites communities to reflect on their histories, highlight local voices and shape the nation’s shared future. Rural newsroom leaders can ask questions and discuss how reporting and community relationships could intersect with these efforts, from connecting with local museums and cultural organizations to elevating rural stories, history and perspectives in a national moment of reflection.
