Save Time, Money, and Clients with Clear Project Scoping

· 5:00 PM
Online

Freelancers who work on a project basis have an enemy, and that enemy is scope creep. When a project balloons out of control, we can burn out and client relationships turn sour. Learn how to avoid this fate from a panel of veteran audio freelancers, sharing guidance that will come in handy for those working in any kind of medium. This discussion will cover how to negotiate a strong contract, how to manage shifting responsibilities on a project, and when to walk away.

November Gathering: Back to the Beginnings

· 6:00 PM
170, 550 Vandalia Street, Saint Anthony Park, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55114 United States

We’re flipping the script and going Back to the Beginnings with our very own “amateur night.” We’ll be screening a selection of our community’s very first films at our community partner venue - Saint Paul Neighborhood Network. Before the deadlines, the credits, and the industry jargon, this work was hopefully fun, and it all started somewhere. We want to laugh, celebrate early passion, and hear the stories behind what first pulled you into this field. No pressure to speak when your film screens, there will be plenty of time to chat and mingle afterward. To share a piece, please fill out this form by October 29th with your name and a link—we’ll keep it just between us until the big night. Nonfiction works and docs are encouraged, but all genres are welcome – just keep the clip under 5 minutes! The more rough-around-the-edges, the better. This isn’t about ego; it’s about fun, vulnerability, and remembering why we fell in love with storytelling in the first place. And yes, there’ll even be an audience award (details TBD). Starting at 5pm, we’ll provide some food and drinks as we celebrate each others’ early works. By 7:30 we’ll wrap up and migrate next door to Lake Monster Brewing to continue the conversation. Suggested donations start at $5 and all go toward supporting future hub programming. ⭐ Are you a VC Gold member? Sign in and RSVP for free! Not Gold? Join us and attend all events gratis.

Behind the Lens with Taj Devore-Bey

· 6:30 PM
Symphony Studio / 1516 1516 N 5th St, Unit 104, Philadelphia , PA 19122 USA

Behind the Lens of Spirit: A Workshop with Cinematographer and VC member, Taj DeVore-Bey Presented by Video Consortium Philadelphia Spirit is a coming-of-age docu-series that follows the George Washington High School Eagles cheerleading team—the first from a Philadelphia public school to compete at Nationals. Executive produced by Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton, the series captures the drive, joy, and emotional truth of a team balancing ambition with the realities of an underfunded school district. In this workshop, Philadelphia-based cinematographer Taj DeVore-Bey shares his creative process behind bringing Spirit to life—how he built trust with the Eagles, approached movement and lighting to mirror their energy, and used cinematography to celebrate their spirit both on and off the mat. Taj will unpack the challenges and choices that shaped the series’ visual tone, offering insight into collaborative storytelling, representing community authentically, and finding poetry in documentary realism. Who it’s for: Filmmakers, cinematographers, documentarians, and anyone curious about visual storytelling rooted in empathy and craft. Please note: guests will be able to park in the parking lot across the street for free.
