The Biz Basics Of Video Creator Journalism | Lessons From Those Who’ve Made It

· 1:00 PM
Location TBA

Today’s video journalists are being asked to do it all: report, produce, build an audience, navigate platforms, follow trends, find revenue, and think like business owners. In this three-part series from Video Consortium, explore what it actually takes to build a sustainable career around video creator journalism: from revenue models and sponsorships to brand integrations and everything in between. What's the most reliable form of income for a creator? The most lucrative? How many different ways can a creator make a good living? Brand deals, subscriptions, consultancies, affiliate programs, events ... even video games? In their work for Creator Spotlight , Francis Zierer and Natalia Pérez-González, have seen it all, interviewing well over 100 creators over the last three years. They speak to YouTubers, newsletterists, podcasters, and TikTokers; entertainers, trained journalists, influencer marketing agents, and investors. To kick off our October series, join the Creator Spotlight team to learn which creators business models are most sustainable, most common, and most lucrative. You'll walk away with an understanding of the opportunities and pitfalls of each creator revenue model. FACILITATOR BIOS: Francis Zierer is the editor of Creator Spotlight, beehiiv's newsletter and podcast cataloguing how creator businesses grow and monetize — from independent, newsletter-based journalists to lifestyle YouTubers to the strategists and entrepreneurs serving them all.His work explores the creator as a distinct category of digital media worker; the borders (and lack thereof) between creators, journalists, and other media producers; the relationships between creators and platforms; and how creators build sustainable businesses. Natalia Pérez-González (she/her) is an Afro-Latina journalist, producer, and Assistant Editor at Creator Spotlight (beehiiv), where she researches and reports on the creator economy through the lenses of labor and identity. Her work examines how creators build sustainable careers, navigate platform precarity, and create durable business models through owned audiences, private communities, and collective infrastructure. In past lives, she was a Newhouse Foundation Scholar and a Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow, and her writing has appeared in Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, Bustle, and The Nation. ⭐Registration for this event is free if you have a VC Gold membership. 15% discount for all others if you RSVP for more than one workshop. How to Report Accurately Without Getting Cancelled Along the Way

· 6:00 PM
Online

In a fast-moving digital environment, creating content that is accurate, engaging, and responsible can be challenging—especially when covering sensitive or polarizing topics. In this hands-on webinar, Factchequeado will share practical strategies for content creators to verify information using both traditional fact-checking methods and AI-powered verification tools, identify misinformation, and report responsibly while maintaining credibility with their audiences. We’ll also explore what it means to create content as a bilingual Latino creator speaking to the diverse and complex Latino communities in the United States. Using data and research about Latino audiences—including how they consume, share, and engage with information—we’ll discuss how creators can better understand who they are speaking to, avoid treating Latinos as a monolithic audience, and make more informed decisions about the topics, language, framing, and formats they use. The goal is to give creators practical tools to produce reliable, high-quality content, navigate public backlash and misinformation, and build trust with the communities they serve.
